Why short workouts work
Salespeople do not want long classroom sessions, and sales leaders cannot afford to take teams away from customers for days at a time. The Sales Gym Methodology changes how learning happens. Each session is short, focused and directly connected to the behaviours that drive performance.
Like physical training, skills grow through regular practice over time. Spacing the workouts across several months lets people apply each skill with customers before the next session.
How a Sales Gym workout runs
Each Sales Gym is a practical two-hour workout, run virtually or in a hybrid format, with a small group of 6–7 participants. In every session participants:
- practise a specific skill in realistic exercises;
- apply the tools to their own live opportunities;
- commit to personal actions before the next workout.
Small groups mean everyone practises, receives feedback and has nowhere to hide.
Workouts follow a consistent structure, so participants know what to expect and can prepare. A short review of commitments from the previous session opens each workout, which keeps accountability high and shows the group what is working in the field.
Managers as coaches
The methodology runs over three to six months, and sales managers are developed as coaches alongside their teams. They follow up on commitments, observe the new behaviours in the field and keep momentum going between workouts. The result is confidence through practice, consistency through coaching and continuous improvement through feedback and reflection.
The Sales Gym across countries
Because workouts are virtual and short, the Sales Gym scales well across countries and time zones. We have used it with medical devices sales teams in nine European countries, giving time-efficient learning that drives immediate, sustained implementation with sales managers. Groups can be organised by country and language or mixed internationally, with every group following the same workout plan.
The Sales Gym was created by Steve Potiphar, who leads our Health & Life Sciences team, and it works for any B2B sales team.
Planning a Sales Gym programme
A Sales Gym programme starts with the behaviours that matter most for your results. We agree these with your sales leaders, then design a sequence of workouts that builds each skill step by step. Every workout has a clear focus, practical exercises and a link to participants' real opportunities.
Groups of 6–7 are formed by role, region or language. Workouts are scheduled across three to six months at a steady rhythm, so there is time to apply each skill with customers between sessions. Sales managers take part in their own coaching development, learn the same tools and agree how they will follow up with each person.
The Sales Gym can stand alone or support a wider programme, for example reinforcing value selling or key account management after initial workshops. It also works well alongside Skeells, where salespeople can practise between workouts and managers can see where coaching is needed.
